On a sunny Saturday morning, Launceston Road Runners coach, Mary Roberts, led a group
of enthusiastic club members on a social run over Dartmoor.
The 6-mile route started out at Okehampton Train Station, heading eastwards and up onto
Dartmoor, then, continuing to the south, past East Hill and through Halstock Pony Farm.
After a brief stop, the group continued climbing up to the base of Halstock Hill. The route
then followed the path down to the East Okemont River where the runners took another
brief stop to regroup and take photographs.
Heading west, another climb – following the path around the base of Halstock Hill and then
south, taking in the beautiful views around Rowtor. Eventually heading back north with a
mainly downhill return, towards Okehampton Camp.
The weather was perfect and the sun shone for the duration of the run. The going underfoot
was perfect too – not muddy or too wet, however, some of the runners couldn’t resist
getting their trail shoes wet and waded across Moor Brook whilst reminiscing about a
previous run that had included a thigh deep wade through one of the flooded rivers,
fortunately this time it was only ankle deep!
Sploshing on with their shoes full of water, the group then continued heading north, back
towards Okehampton station. After changing out of wet shoes and clothes, everyone
enjoyed the perfect post-run lunch and chat at the Granite Way Cafe.
